Knee Pain
Main causes of knee pain
Knee pain is a common complaint that can have a variety of causes. Some common causes of knee pain include:
- Arthritis: This is a common cause of knee pain, particularly in older adults. Arthritis is a condition that causes inflammation in the joints, which can lead to pain, stiffness, and swelling.
- Tendinitis: This is a condition in which the tendons, which are the strong, fibrous bands of tissue that connect muscles to bones, become inflamed. Bursitis: This is a condition in which the small, fluid-filled sacs (called bursae) that cushion the bones, tendons, and muscles near the joints become inflamed.
- Meniscus tear: The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage in the knee that cushions the joint and helps it move smoothly. A meniscus tear can occur due to a sudden twisting or turning movement, and it can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the knee.
- Fractures: A fracture is a break in a bone. Fractures can occur in the bones of the knee, such as the thigh bone (femur) or the shin bone (tibia), and they can cause severe pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the knee.

What are some Treatments for Knee Pain?
Physical therapy is often an effective treatment for knee pain. Physical therapists are trained to help people with injuries or conditions that affect their movement and mobility. They can develop a treatment plan that includes exercises to strengthen the muscles around the knee and improve range of motion, as well as techniques to reduce pain and swelling. Some common physical therapy treatments for knee pain include:
- Stretching and range of motion exercises: These exercises are designed to improve flexibility and mobility in the knee and surrounding muscles. They may include gentle stretches, such as the quad stretch or the calf stretch, or more active exercises, such as straight leg raises or leg presses.
- Strengthening exercises: These exercises are designed to build up the muscles around the knee, including the quadriceps, the hamstrings, and the calf muscles. Strengthening exercises may include resistance band exercises, dumbbell exercises, or bodyweight exercises.
- Balance and proprioception exercises: These exercises are designed to improve balance and coordination, and to help the body better sense its position in space. They may include exercises on a balance board, single leg balance exercises, or exercises using small discs or foam pads.
It’s important to work with a physical therapist to develop a treatment plan that’s tailored to your specific needs and goals. A physical therapist can help you safely progress through your treatment and return to your normal activities as soon as possible.
