Break Up Scar Tissue. Restore Mobility. Relieve Pain.

What is IASTM?

IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) is a modern form of manual therapy that uses specially designed tools to treat muscle pain, stiffness, and mobility restrictions. This technique targets the fascia, tendons, and muscles to restore tissue health, break up adhesions, and speed up healing.

At NuPhysical in Las Vegas, we use IASTM as part of our integrated rehab protocols to help athletes, weekend warriors, and everyday patients move and feel better — fast.

How does IASTM work?

Using a smooth-edged stainless steel or polymer tool, your therapist gently glides over the skin, applying controlled pressure to areas of restriction. This technique helps:

  • Break up scar tissue and adhesions
  • Stimulate circulation and collagen remodeling
  • Reduce inflammation and improve range of motion
  • Promote faster healing in muscles, tendons, and fascia

Patients often describe the sensation as a deep massage or “scraping” — followed by a noticeable feeling of release and mobility improvement.

Benefits of IASTM

What Conditions Is IASTM Used For?

IASTM is ideal for treating both new injuries and chronic soft tissue dysfunction. Common conditions include:

  • Muscle strains and pulls
  • Tendonitis (Achilles, patellar, rotator cuff, etc.)
  • Fasciitis and fascial restrictions
  • Scar tissue after surgery or trauma
  • Shin splints and IT band syndrome
  • Tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Neck and shoulder tightness
  • Low back stiffness and hip pain
  • Postural imbalances

What to Expect During an IASTM Session

Session Duration: 15–30 minutes
Sensation: Deep massage or scraping with a sense of tension release

1️ Evaluation

Your therapist will assess the involved tissues, range of motion, and compensatory movement patterns.

2️ Instrument Application

Using IASTM tools, we apply firm, controlled strokes along muscle fibers and fascia. Mild redness or petechiae (temporary skin markings) may appear — this is a normal response indicating improved circulation.

3️ Integration & Movement

IASTM is often followed by stretching, corrective exercise, or neuromuscular retraining to lock in gains and reinforce healthy movement.

Is IASTM Safe?

Yes — when performed by a certified professional. At NuPhysical, our providers are trained in evidence-based IASTM techniques and always tailor pressure and technique to your comfort and condition.

IASTM may not be suitable for:

  • Patients with blood disorders or clotting issues
  • Individuals with active infections or wounds
  • Pregnant individuals (on certain body regions)
  • People taking blood-thinners

We screen thoroughly to ensure safety before beginning any treatment.
